My mother had other reasons for getting us outside, but you're right about the benefits.

When my daughter returned from college, she reclaimed her bedroom which I had happily turned into an office. With no indoor office space I set up my laptop on my patio daily. It has turned out to be a wonderful "office."

The patio cover allows me to enjoy the sun without being burned by it, and the perimeter of my patio is filled with flowers--gardenias, roses, midnight jasmime, and an elevated flower bed that I've loaded with a variety of flowers.

Then in the patio itself I set up a rug on the floor with a living-room type setting with a patio-type couch, two chairs and a low table.

The plants sitting and hanging around the patio are not on the sprinkler system so I have to get my hands dirty a few times a week.

Along the side of my house in addition to the orange and lemon trees that were already here when we moved in, I planted tomatoes, bell peppers, serrano peppers, cantaloupe, rosemary, and squash. I'm not a natural when it comes to gardening, but I have managed to keep my "farm" alive and enjoy the fruits of my harvest.

It's the best of two worlds.
