Why Don’t People Take You Seriously?

By David B. Bohl | May 12, 2008 | No Responses Yet

istock_000005487266xsmall.jpgFrom my article 5 Reasons Why People Don’t Take You Seriously and How to Fix It at Dumb Little Man:

“Ever wonder how some people manage to command a room simply by entering it?

Do you sometimes feel like you get mowed down by other people’s big ideas, priorities and needs?

Is it exceedingly difficult for you to get people to cooperate and follow your lead?

While some people seem blessed with strong character from birth, the rest of us flounder, stagnate, learn to acquire a taste for shoe leather. Why is this? It may be because people aren’t taking you seriously enough. And the reason is that, most likely, you don’t take yourself seriously enough.

How others see us begins with how we see ourselves. We project this self-perception into every action and every word we speak. Here are five reasons people aren’t taking you seriously and how to fix it.”

Unearthing Your Deepest Desires

By David B. Bohl | May 5, 2008 | One Response

istock_000005724765xsmall.jpgMany people go through life in pursuit of happiness and fulfillment, without ever having a clear picture of what those things mean to them. Each person has unique ideas regarding what constitutes happiness, based largely on that person’s individual values and past experiences. In order to be truly happy, you must first determine what it is that makes you content, fulfilled, and satisfied. Only then can you take steps to achieve your own personal state of happiness.

In order to determine what you want out of life to give you a sense of fulfillment or contentment, try the following exercises.

1. Find out Where You are Stuck

Ask yourself what aspects of your life make you feel like you are in a rut or that you feel need to be changed. In doing so, try to determine how long you have felt you were stuck in these particular habits, and ask yourself why you have not yet changed them. Read Post

When Family Comes First

By David B. Bohl | April 9, 2008 | No Responses Yet

istock_000003760371xsmall.jpgIt is incredibly difficult trying to balance a career, family, exercise, and personal enjoyment all at the same time. It can become a real juggling act, trying to devote enough time to everything and everyone on your list. It can seem nearly impossible to maintain a healthy work life balance.

Children are highly perceptive, and learn at an early age how to manipulate our emotions so they work against us. It is not unusual to hear the calls of, “You love your job more than you love me,” echoing down the hallways.

Stop for a moment to consider, though, if there is any truth to those cries for attention. Take a good look at how much time you have been devoting to your family, and how much of that time has truly been one-on-one interaction. Time spent with your family while you are worrying about tomorrow’s meeting or taking business calls does not count.

Everybody Needs “Me” Time

By David B. Bohl | April 5, 2008 | 3 Responses

When you lead a busy life that includes a rewarding or demanding career, combined with the responsibilities that come along with having a family, it can seem like you never have a moment to spare for yourself. You hit the ground running when the alarm goes off in the morning, and never sit still until you drop, exhausted, back into bed that night.

istock_000005161288xsmall.jpgIt is important to remember that you need to make time for yourself somewhere in your busy schedule. Whether you use a half-hour during your lunch break to sit outside and read a book, or go for a solitary walk in the evening, you need to ensure there is at least some time in your day dedicated to you. Allowing personal time is an important aspect of achieving a healthy work life balance. Read Post

What’s a Mentor and Where Do I Find One?

By David B. Bohl | April 1, 2008 | 10 Responses

Have you ever met someone who seemed to embody everything you ever wanted to be or do in your life? And you wished some of what they had could rub off on you? Have you ever asked someone for help or guidance when you felt you’d lost your way?

Many people today believe that having a mentor is the ultimate secret to achieving success in all areas of their lives. A mentor is a teacher, advisor, or guide who can lead you down a proven path to success. He/she has been there and knows what it takes to move from where you are to where you want to be. No need to re-invent the wheel!

Most of us get stuck in our own stuff and can’t see our way out. We may know what our goals are, we may take action, but when we don’t get results, we are frustrated and don’t always know what to do differently. Was it our thought process, our attitude, the words we said? Was it the right action at the wrong time or vice versa? It’s pretty tough, sometimes, to be an observer in your own life and to know how to reach your goals when everything you’ve done hasn’t worked!

istock_000005671280xsmall.jpgThat’s where mentors can help. They cut the learning curve and the time it takes to reach your goals. They have achieved their own success and are ready to give back. They enjoy helping others reach the same level of success they’re achieved. Read Post
