Is Blogging on the Beach a Violation of Work-Life Balance?

By David B. Bohl | April 13, 2007 | No Responses Yet

Susie Wee asks is blogging on the beach a violation of work-life balance?  As Susie lays on a beach in Hawaii blogging she feels a bit guilty that she isn’t sitting back relaxing and reflecting.  She also said that if she doesn’t capture her thoughts when she’s in the moment then she’s only creating more work for herself because then she’ll have to make the time to pull out the computer and try to recall and write up her thoughts.

That’s what Susie Wee asks over at her HP Research, Technology, & Teamwork blog.

You see, Susie is conflicted - she’s laying on a beach in sunny Hawaii, blogging away, and feeling a little bit guilty that she’s not able to “sit back, relax, and reflect.”

Susie feels that she may be rationalizing things when she writes:

“If I don’t capture my thoughts while I’m in the moment, then I’ll actually be creating more work for myself because I’ll have to find time later on to pull out my computer and try to recall and write up my thoughts. So, I could argue that blogging on the beach supports work-life balance.”

Rest assured, Susie, you’re on the right road. Enjoy the journey.

Don’t fall into the trap of listening to somebody else’s ideal of life balance. You’ve defined what balance looks likes to you and you’re living it. There will be plenty of time to “sit back, relax, and reflect.”
