Mothers and Work-Family Balance

By David B. Bohl | May 14, 2007 | No Responses Yet

Four-in-Ten working moms would take a pay cut to spend more time with their kids, according to the annual mother’s day survey put out by Careerbuilder.com  Read on for more specifics of the survey.

According to CarrerBuilder.com’s Annual Mother’s Day survey, “Four-in-Ten Working Moms Would Take a Pay Cut to Spend More Time with Their Kids.”

Here are the specifics:

  • 25% say they are dissatisfied with their work/life balance,
  • 44% say they would take a pay cut if it meant they could spend more time with their kids,
  • 9% say they would give up 10% or more of their salary,
  • Of working moms who are not the sole financial provider, 49% say they would leave their job if their spouse or significant other made enough money for the family to live comfortably.

I know exactly how they feel, as do many other working fathers. I don’t want to take away from the Moms, but working parents in general feel these ways. The statistics might not be the same, but the attitudes and frustration are.

As a matter of fact, I look forward to CareerBuilder.com’s Annual Father’s Day survey. If its results are anything like the 2006 poll, which found that “Four-in-Ten Working Dads Would Give Up Breadwinner Role to Spend More Time With Their Children”, you’ll be able to check my prediction.

By the way, the one difference noted between working mothers and fathers was that working fathers experience less flexibility with their employers than working mothers.

Stay tuned.
