“Plenty of snow, but no blizzard”

By David B. Bohl | February 26, 2007 | No Responses Yet

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper summed up the blizzard forecast by saying that the storm socked the state but it wasn’t the punch anyone expected.  Is it possible to ever get used to Wisconsin weather?  I don’t think anyone gets used to it; it’s something people just tolerate.

“Storm socks the state, but it’s not the punch we expected.” That’s the way the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper read this morning, and that about summed it all up. The paper continued: “Not that anyone was complaining, but the blizzard forecast to blow through southern Wisconsin on Sunday didn’t quite live up to its hype. Even though the storm dropped lots of snow, caused accidents and power failures, canceled flights and forced snowblowers to work overtime, folks bracing for the worst woke up Sunday to see that things weren’t as bad as some expected.”

Where I live, we experienced about 6 inches of snow on Friday night, another 10 or 12 inches of wet, heavy snow overnight Saturday (complete with “thunder snow”). I awoke Sunday morning to a 3 foot snow drift across our the entry to our garage doors, preventing me from running out early that morning as planned. Flurries then continued throughout the day Sunday, leaving us maybe another inch or so.

One casualty was a pine tree in our side yard that succumbed to the high winds associated with the storm.

A friend in Tampa recently asked “How do you get used to the weather” in Wisconsin? To which I replied: “I don’t think one gets used to it - one tolerates it at best.”

Life goes on … it’s snowing as we speak.
