The Unanticipated Benefits of Blogging

By David B. Bohl | June 7, 2007 | One Response

Oftentimes when we blog we forget that more people than we realize read our blogs, and sometimes we forget that it can actually be enjoyed. Oftentimes I get so caught up in what I’m doing (blogging) that I forget I have family and friends that read my blog as well.

Sometimes I forget just how much fun blogging is.

Take yesterday, for example. When my wife arrived home from work, and after our usual discussion about each of our days, she asked: “Have you never received a good Father’s Day gift?”

I shouldn’t have been surprised by that question, but I was taken aback somewhat. I had forgotten that, in addition to the people that read my blog and the people I hope will read my blog, I have family and friends that read my blog! Sometimes I get so wrapped up in writing a post that I lose sight of that.

If you didn’t catch it, yesterday’s post contained data from a survey that found that 53% of Fathers reported that they have never received a good gift on Father’s Day. It didn’t even occur to me that my wife and/or kids would think that I fell in that 53%.

After all, what can you buy for the man that has everything? I’m living a full life today. I have my family around me. We make time for one another. I’ve been given the gift of time - their time. What more could I ask for?

So, in answer to my wife’s question, I simply replied: “Of course I have. I’ve received breakfast in bed. I’ve had special dinners prepared for me. But the most important part is that I’ve spent every Father’s Day with you and the kids. Those are the best gifts of all.”

Sound a bit sappy? Too bad. That’s what matters most to me.

What’s most important to you on Father’s Day?

this is such a wonderful post. i have always wondered what i could give my husband and my dad on father’s day. something meaningful… my dad would always reply, having you here is gift enough. thought that was sappy too, but now that i am a mom…i realize what a precious gift that is. Happy Father’s Day in advance!
