Thinking About Freelancing?

By David B. Bohl | May 9, 2007 | One Response

If you are thinking about freelancing check out “Top 10 Reasons you should quit your job today and become a freelancer” from the Freelance Switch blog.  Here are two of the reasons, in no particular order, the list mentioned:  because the only time you should be in a cubicle is when you’re in a restroom and you can kiss that annoying co-worker’s bad breath goodbye…Not literally.

Does the idea of freelancing intrigue you? Maybe it’s the thought of being independent, flexible, in control, and self-sufficient. Many have chosen this route in an effort to pursue work-life balance.

Don’t know where to start? Looking for ways to augment your part-time business? Hoping to make your part-time business a full-time one?

Freelance Switch blog has put forth a list, a la David Letterman, labeled “Top 10 Reasons you should quit your job today and become a freelancer.” Here it is:

Number 10:
Because the only time you should be in a cubicle is when you’re in a restroom

Number 9:
You can kiss that annoying co-worker’s bad breath goodbye … Not literally

Number 8:
The only creative control you currently have is the spelling of your name

Number 7:
Your boss asks you why your toilet breaks last so long

Number 6:
Because commuting to a freelancer means moving from your bedroom to your study

Number 5:
Only farmers should wake up that early

Number 4:
You won’t need to ever pull your over-the-phone sickness routine again

Number 3:
Because for freelancers casual fridays means working in your underpants

Number 2:
Because your company charges $200 an hour, and you get $10

…. And the number one reason you should quit your job today and become a freelancer:
Because you could do it SOOOO much better!

Freelance Switch has also compiled a list of 101 Essential Freelancing Resources (which has now grown to 126) and 101 Ideas to Get More Freelance Work and Generate New Client Leads.

If you’re just starting out as a freelancer, gizfolio offers 5 Freelance Tips for Beginners that might help newcomers to avoid some common pitfalls.

Freelancing also means running one’s own small business as the WSJ’s Startup Journal article Free-lancers Also Must be Office Managers points out.
