It's the truth. And I know this, because I lived it. I was once just like you.
A life out of control: does this sound like you?
Back in the 80's, I launched a business that became one of the largest and most profitable in its market, in a span of just seven years. I became an instant success... but I had to work twice as hard just to maintain that level of success. I was putting in 100 hour weeks, dividing my time between New York and Chicago... working hard, playing harder, and pushing myself to the extreme.
The truth was, I was sorely missing out on the important things. My wife and two young children. Resting, enjoying life, having hobbies. My health. All these were fading into the background - and at the rate I was going, it was looking like they'd soon fade to black.
One day I woke up on a plane, completely disoriented. I had no idea what day it was, or what city I was flying to. In a panic, I summoned the flight attendant, who helped me get my bearings. And that's when it hit me. My life was controlling me... and I was out of control.
That day, I vowed to make a change. Not just think about it, or talk about it, but really take steps to undo what I'd done. I wanted to be there for my family. I wanted to quit the behaviors that weren't serving me. I wanted to un-program the "Be More, Do More" mentality that had impressed itself into my psyche.
I wanted my life back.

These days, I live a much happier and more fulfilling existence. I spend time with my wife and kids, and I pursue interests of my own choosing. I make my own work hours. I take time off when needed. And above all, I treat my body like the sacred temple it is.
Today, I have a different kind of business - I'm a Certified Life Coach. I like to call myself a Lifestyle Designer, because I help people begin living their best lives - not some one-size-fits-all, contrived happiness.
Today, I help others arrive at the place where I struggled to get to in my own life for so long.
It took me half a lifetime to really learn how to slow down and appreciate the good things. But I want you to know... if you're feeling deeply unsatisfied, I know exactly where you're coming from. It doesn't have to be that way!

- Develop a personal mission statement which will become the concrete foundation of your new life.

- Gradually transform those goals into habits.
- Be willing to modify the plan as needed.
- Take it one day at a time.
- Make sure you have an accountability partner.
Most people will attempt this on their own at first. But the truth is that if you're buried up to your neck in your own chaotic life... it's going to take another person to help dig you out.
Maybe that helper could be a family member or friend. Except that friends and family are usually too caught up in the success and status mentality that we're trying so desperately to break free from.
