My best friend since high school was an emotional vampire. It took my other best friend and I TEN YEARS to figure this out. Even after we cut her off, we would spend hours trying to make sense of her behavior, trying to lighten ourselves of the load of emotional crap she'd left behind.

When I discovered that her mother and two younger sisters are exactly the same...and I mean EXACTLY, I did some research.

I believe that "histrionic personality disorder" is the medical/scientific term for what is a very unique personality type. And it's hereditary.

What's really frightening is how an emotional vampire behaves as a parent. It's almost as if they have children in order to feed their vampirism, and when their children reach their own vampire maturity, the mother will ruthlessly kick the child out of the nest to find her own source of emotional sustenance.

The emotional vampire is great at spinning and spinning your perception of reality until you doubt up from down and left from right, they then "helpfully" tell you what is real. This can often lead to massive internal conflict and a feeling of losing yourself. I found this to be helpful, if it feels good it is proabably good, if it feels bad then it is probably bad.
When the emotional vampires begin to spin and drain you, it nearly always feels very very bad........getting out is easy, staying out of the seductive web is much more difficult after all ....."they love you so much and you are so so important to them because you are "the one" RUN!!! at that point........or be lunch. :)

I have had more than my share of these emotional vampires in my life. I'm proud to report, however, that as I evolved into an authentic person I've rid myself of them one by one.

Now when I encounter a new one I successfully steer clear of developing an ongoing relationship. For the brief time we're together I thank God I'm wise enough now to spot them and limit the time I am around them.
