Sharon,

It's one of those things that is best learned by doing. Decide what your approach will be - business, personal, or combined - after understanding the pitfalls above. Find some friends in other groups or near you town who share some interest with you. Start a Facebook page for your hotel business. Post interesting content and recruit people to participate. Join other groups that interest you and actively contribute to them.

The "secret", if there is one, is that you have to give to get.

Facebook Freelancer,

That's been my experience as well. People tend to let their guards down a bit more and show there's more to them than business.

Good point, however, there is something a bit more personal about Facebook that has actually resulted in me getting to know people (professionally) who I would never have had th chance on LinkedIn. I guess it depends on what you say and how you conduct yourself there, but for me, Facebook has actually resulted in new clients signing up for my services. For that reason alone, i'd say it's worth getting on there even if it does take some self discipline to avoid the goofiness and time-waste factor.

Or you could just use LinkedIn for professional networking, and keep Facebook for the daft nonsense.
