I have often told my younger colleagues most &quot;successful career people&quot; had gotten breaks from someone. The time when they were promoted to a position they had zero experience in. Someone took a &quot;gamble&quot;, calculated or otherwise and gave the guy a break.

I am not sure, how many receipents accept this as a break or help or just assumed they were the most qualified. 

I tell myself that I&#039;ll treat people as I would want them to treat my children. This has helped in &quot;being nice.&quot;</description>

I agree that many people cannot see beyond their needs and wants.  The problem is becoming more pervasive as people keep getting busier - trying to do more, have more, and produce more.

I think this high-lights one of the fundamental problems in society today - most people you meet are too wrapped up in themselves to worry about helping anyone else, both physically and emotionally. &quot;What&#039;s in it for me&quot; is what most people think instead of getting satisfaction from helping another human being.
