I would recommend that you refer to various reports by the University of New Hampshire and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Their reports very correctly surmise that the so-called "internet predator problem" is grossly overstated and our kids are not at the great risk that law enforcement, the media, and others, want us to believe. These reports show that these types of crimes are declining and that much of the "problem" is not with adults seeking out children. In fact, I know of one case of a "15 year old girl" (actually a decoy cop) who was allegedly "solicited" in an adult chat room. My first reaction to this was, "what is a 15 year old girl - real or not - doing in an adult chat room?" The cops are fabricated many of these cases to pad their numbers so they can receive funding.

What a great post. You are right on with everything here. Parents have to take a step back and remember that their kids don’t know a world without the Internet. What we see as a tool, to them is a way of life. That has an extreme impact on the value placed on the Internet and the whole “taking for granted” aspect. One other idea that I enforce is monitoring. If kids are going to use this incredible technology to (virtually) travel the world, why aren’t parents being more proactive and forceful about knowing what their child is doing? When I was a kid and just went ‘cruising’ around town, my parent’s gave me the Spanish Inquisition. How can parents today just let their kids walk through that portal and not even care or bother to ask or know what their kids are doing? Pure irresponsibility. For help in obtaining that 100% knowledge, check out our PC Pandora monitoring software (www.pcpandora.com). It’s not snooping; it’s being a responsible well-informed 21st century parent.
