What can we learn from Brett Favre about humility?

When I say humility, I don’t mean being shy, scared or timid. Humility describes an attitude and lifestyle that seeks the betterment of others – sometimes, at the expense of one’s own personal fame and glory. In the case of both sports heroes and real life heroes, we’re talking about someone who leads, not because of their own star power, but by their own personal example.

About Leading with Humility?

  • This weekend I did two things: Watched the snowy Packer game on TV (was this photo by a relative as the photo credit implies? The lucky so-and-so!), and I coincidentally dusted off my 17-year-old copy of a translation of the Tao de Ching, by Lao Tze. There are many English translations of this Chinese Zen classic, but the one I own, by Stephen Mitchell, is the most poetic, in my opinion.

    I don’t have my copy of his translation in front of me, but a commonly cited translation of one of the chapters includes this:

    In order to master people
    One must speak as their servant;
    In order to lead people
    One must follow them.

    Brett’s humility and passion for his craft is, I’m sure, a big part of the magic that brings greatness out of his team. I went to work on Monday hoping I could live up to that ideal. Thanks, David, for reminding me of this inspiring message!

  • I’ve always admired Brett Favre, but never thought about how I could apply anything from his life in my own. Thanks for showing me that even I can learn from Brett Favre!

  • Jeff,

  • Vicki,
